Rise of the funerals that leave out God

One in 20 families now rejects a church service in favour of a celebration of life, according to the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD), which represents 85 per cent of the industry.

The rise is being attributed to people's growing willingness to admit that they are non-believers, and to their desire to avoid "hypocrisy".

“I think there is a large, unrepresented constituency of people for whom religion doesn't enter their heads. ”

Sir Jonathan Miller

Quotations

If it turns out that there is a God, I don't think that he's evil. But the worst that you can say about him is that basically he's an underachiever.

Woody Allen, film Love and Death

Quotations

"I would not for my life destroy one star of human hope, but I want it so that when a poor woman rocks the cradle and sings a lullaby to the dimpled darling, she will not be compelled to believe that ninety-nine chances in a hundred she is raising kindling wood for hell."

About
The Liverpool Humanist Group started in October 2005, and is affiliated to the British Humanist Association & National Secular Society. We are a relatively new group and have recently been focusing on organising events and activities of interest, with the aim of encouraging debate around the issues of Humanism, and in creating a space for people who have 'lost their religion' or never had it in the first place! to talk and share experiences.

We usually meet on the second Wednesday of each month, occassionally this changes, centrally in Liverpool, see the panel on the left for our next meeting and venue.
For more information you can e.mail Megan at:

'Humanism is the belief that we can live good lives without religious or superstitious beliefs. Humanists make sense of the world using reason, experience and shared human values. We seek to make the best of the one life we have by creating meaning and purpose for ourselves. We take responsibility for our actions and work with others for the common good.' British Humanist Association 2003

Do you share Humanists views on the big questions about life, death, values and beliefs? Humanism encompasses atheism and agnosticism but is an active and ethical philosophy far greater than negative responses to religion. There is an alternative to religion - you don't have to believe in God to feel part of a community, or to be a good person!

It's a great time to join us - be part of shaping the Liverpool Humanist Group. We welcome new members. If you're not sure we're what you're looking for, come and meet us before you make up your mind - see our Joining LHG page for more information.

Religious Maxine
Maxine was driving down the street in a sweat because she had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place.
Looking up toward heaven, she said, 'Lord, take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to church every Sunday for the rest of my life and give up sex and tequila.'
Miraculously, a parking place appeared.
She looked up again and said, 'Never mind. I found one.

The drunk in the cathedral

A drunk staggered down the main street of the town. Somehow he managed to make it up the stairs to a cathedral and into the entrance, where he crashed from pew to pew, finally making his way to a side aisle and into a confessional.

A priest had observed all this, and figured the fellow needed some help, so he entered his side of the confessional. After the priest sat there in deathly silence, he finally asked, "May I help you, my son?"

"I dunno," came the drunk's voice from behind the partition. "You got any paper on your side?"

By some estimates, over 1 billion people in the world are non-religious (humanist/secular/atheist) yet many traditional parenting techniques are based on religion. Quotations

" . . . I wish to comment on something that in the current climate of debate has been mainly overlooked: the fact that those who are not religious have available to them a rich ethical outlook, all the richer indeed for being the result of reflection as opposed to conditioning, whose roots lie in classical antiquity when the great tradition of ethical thought in Western philosophy began."
